Is a Circumcision Painful?

A circumcision can be performed on a baby or young person. Adults usually recover in two to
three weeks. Some people may need to miss work for up to a week while others may be unable
or unwilling to return home. Others may need a shorter recovery period and can return to their
usual physical activities (e.g. masturbation) in three to six week. Your doctor will determine the
best recovery time. Most people experience mild to moderate postoperative pain. Your doctor
might prescribe a pain relief medication to help you recover from surgery. An antibiotic may also
be prescribed to prevent infection.
The severity and extent of circumcision will affect the pain. Anesthesia is used in many cases to
perform the procedure. It can be mild or moderate in most cases. It is rare for a circumcision to
be extremely painful, and it depends on the severity of complications. The more uncomfortable
you feel, the younger you are. A doctor may administer local anesthetics to make the procedure
more pleasant. An injection or a cream can be used to administer local anesthetic.
The risk of infection and bleeding can be increased by circumcision. It can also lead to swelling
of the penis. Most of these problems can be treated by a doctor, but they may occur after the
procedure. There may be bleeding and yellowing around the penis tip. You should not wear tight
diapers for two to three days. Petroleum jelly can be applied to the area to reduce the chance of
infection.
For a few weeks, your child’s circumcision site will be bruised. After circumcision, your child may
feel some discomfort while urinating, but this usually lasts for only a few days. The pain
medication will help get you through the day. To reduce pain from urinating, you can apply
petroleum jelly to your penis. Moreover, you should stay off your back for a couple of weeks after
the circumcision.
Your doctor will perform the circumcision at a hospital or an obstetrician’s office. A trained
professional, known as a mohel will perform the circumcision in a hospital. The doctor will
remove the penis head from the foreskin during the procedure. The doctor will apply an ointment
to the penis and wrap it in gauze. The entire process takes about 20 minutes.
A circumcision can cost between $847 and $2773. Patients with high deductible health
insurance can save money by paying the entire amount up front. You will need to fast for at least
six hours before you go under the knife. You will meet with a medical team during this time to
discuss the procedure. If you have any questions, your doctor will be happy and able to answer
them. The procedure is straightforward and you’ll be discharged in the same day.
A circumcision has a variety of benefits for adults. It reduces the risk for infection under the skin,
phimosis, as well as urinary tract infections. The risk of developing cervical cancer in a
circumcised male partner is lower than that of a uncircumcised one. There are risks involved
with the procedure. There are possible complications, such as too much bleeding, infection of
the incision site, and the use of pain reliever medicine. The risks are lower when your baby’s
age is young and the procedure has been performed by an experienced practitioner.
In general, a circumcision is an unnecessary surgical procedure and should only be done when
there are good reasons for it. If your son is too young to understand the procedure, it is important
to discuss the procedure with his physician. There are also ethical concerns that must be

addressed. Additional details can be found in the AAP technical report and in the September 1,
2012 issue Pediatrics. These are just some of the many factors you should consider before
deciding whether to have it done.
It can be uncomfortable and prevent infections. Balanitis can occur when bacteria and infection
buildup under the foreskin. The circumcision can reduce HIV infection by up to 60%.
Circumcision can reduce HIV risk by as much as 60%. If done correctly, circumcision may even
lower your risk of getting HIV from an infected woman.
